According to Dr. Tabi-Amankwa, tooth infections such as mouth sores and ulcers could spread beyond the jaw and cause life-threatening complications by obstructing the airway.
Dr. Tabi-Amankwa made the disclosure during a weekly health communication initiative called "Your Health! Our Collective Responsibility," organized by the Tema Regional Office of ErnestEast News. The program aims to promote health literacy and facilitate communication on health-related topics to influence personal health choices.
The ErnestEast News program serves as a public health advocacy platform aimed at exploring the parameters of health communication approaches, including informative, educational, persuasive, and prompting methods.
During the program, Dr. Tabi-Amankwa spoke on the topic of "Oral Health," where he explained that any mouth sore that does not heal after three weeks could be an early sign of cancer. He also noted that stress could cause mouth ulcers, which indicated an imbalance of nutrients like iron or vitamin B12 in the body.
Dr. Tabi-Amankwa also warned that a cavity could lead to a swollen face that could spread to other parts of the body and cause a life-threatening infection. The infection, caused by bacteria in the tooth, could produce toxic by-products, leading to suffocation and death.
