Vegetable traders advised to sprinkle water consistently on their goods

In order to preserve vegetables, vegetable sellers in some Tema markets have advised consumers to regularly sprinkle them with water and store them in freshwater or the refrigerator because the dry season strips them of their moisture.

Ms. Gifty Sabuno, a vegetable vendor, advised Ghana News Agency during an interview at Tema Community One market to keep carrots and green peppers in a plastic bag during the harmattan season as well.

She stated that lettuce must be stored in a plastic bag and cabbage should be kept at its normal stage to avoid shrinking.

She said that if lettuce was left in water for more than three days, its quality could decline, so it was better to sprinkle water on it to keep it moist.

Madam Patricia Anumu reiterated that the harmattan season was making vegetables, particularly carrots, dry because the weather drained the vegetables' moisture, making them less fresh.

She stated that in order to prevent shrinkage, green pepper and cucumber must be stored in bags.

Ms. Mama Wiafe advised storing potatoes and carrots in water to preserve their hardness.
